Leave Of Absence Letter
A leave of absence letter can be a difficult business letter to write. Generally, leave of absence requests are pressing due to the nature of their content. You will be asking for time off and requesting that your current job or position in a company remains intact while you are taking care of your personal issues that are hindering your ability to work. Example issues that would require a leave of absence letter are pregnancy, a family member’s death, personal growth, personal health, family health, temporary relocation, extended travel, or college education in another state. There are many other reasons, but these are the most common requests for a leave of absence letter.
When writing the leave of absence letter, be sure that you are cordial to your employer. Do your best to explain the situation causing the leave of absence and feel free to omit personal information that you do not feel comfortable providing to your employer. Remember that you still have a right to privacy and can generalize your situation in the letter. For example, if there was a death in the family and you must travel out of state for weeks to a few months to grieve and manage the estate, you do not need to include the cause of death or situations that lead up to the event.
Be sure to request a paid leave from your employer, especially if the situation was unforeseen. They can always say no, but if you do not ask, you will receive no pay on your leave of absence unless it specifically states it in your contract. Further you should be clear on the time frame on your absence so your employer knows when to expect your return to business. If your leave of absence is approved by your employer and your position is going to remain while you are on leave, you should regularly check in with your boss and mangers to stay informed about company developments and to keep your name fresh in their mind.
